Here’s what matters

Choosing the right rug size plays a key role in the look and feel of your room. A rug that’s too small or too large can make the whole space feel unbalanced. To create a harmonious interior, start by answering these three questions:

  • Which room do I need the rug for?

  • How big is the room?

  • How will my furniture be arranged?

Tip: If you can’t decide between two rug sizes, we recommend choosing the larger option. To be absolutely sure, mark the measurements on the floor with masking tape. You can find more information about this further down in the article.

The perfect rug for your living room

Use your sofa as a guide to find the right rug size for your living room. Just follow these steps:

  1. Choose a rug that is at least as wide as your sofa – ideally around 20 cm wider.

  2. Place all the furniture in your seating area partly or completely on your rug.

  3. We recommend letting the rug extend around 10–20 cm under the sofa.

Tip: Rugs made from soft natural fibres like wool and cotton create a pleasant indoor climate and add extra cosiness. Synthetic fibres are easy to care for and come in both practical low-pile and stylish high-pile designs.

Rug size in the bedroom

The focal point of your bedroom is your bed. Its size helps determine which rug is right for your space. Follow these steps to create a harmonious arrangement:

  1. Do you want your bedside tables to stand on the rug or on the floor?

  2. If your bed is centred, make sure at least 20 cm of the rug is visible on each side.

  3. For larger rugs, create a visual connection by placing your bed partly or completely on the rug.

Tip: Rugs made from wool or cotton add warmth and cosiness to your bedroom. Soft high-pile designs made from synthetic fibres make getting out of bed feel especially comfortable. Minimalist low-pile rugs bring a sense of calm to the room.

The right rug for your dining room

In the dining room, the right rug size depends on your dining table and seating. To find the perfect fit, just keep these points in mind:

  1. Choose the right shape. Our recommendation: rectangular table – rectangular rug, square table – square rug, round table – round or square rug, oval table – oval or rectangular rug.

  2. Your rug should extend far enough beyond the table so that your chairs have enough space, even when pulled out.

  3. Centre the rug under the dining table to create a harmonious look.

    Tip: Easy-care rugs made from durable synthetic fibres or washable designs are especially suitable for your dining room. It’s best to choose a flat-woven or low-pile rug, as this makes it easier to move the dining chairs.

Rug sizes in the hallway

The right rug size for your hallway depends on the shape and size of the space. Your hallway will look bigger if you keep furniture off the rug and leave some space between the rug and the walls. Make sure to leave at least 20 cm of space around the rug. With these tips, you’ll quickly find the right size:

  • Narrow hallway: Runners are the perfect solution for narrow hallways. Depending on the length of the space, place one or more rugs in a row. Common sizes are 70x200 cm, 80x250 cm or 80x300 cm.

  • L-shaped hallway: Use several runners in a matching design to create harmony and a sense of space. For example, place two rugs at a right angle with a little space between them.

  • Large hallway: Round rugs soften the straight lines of the hallway and create a gentle contrast. Suitable sizes are ⌀ 100 cm, ⌀ 120 cm, ⌀ 150 cm and ⌀ 160 cm.

    Tip: For your hallway, choose flat designs and robust materials like jute, sisal or synthetic fibres. They’re very durable and easy to clean.

How to measure for the right rug size

Want to make sure you find exactly the right rug size for your space? Then measure the area where your rug will go. Here’s the best way to do it:

  1. Arrange your furniture the way you want it to be on the rug later.

  2. Mark the desired area with masking tape or lay out newspapers. This will help you get a feel for how the rug might look in the room.

  3. Check the width and length with a tape measure and note down the dimensions.

  4. Choose the available size that comes closest to your vision.

Tip: Test the masking tape on an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn’t leave any residue.
